Dr EmÅ‘ke Szathmáry Receives 2009 Ignatian Challenge Award
4 Nov 2009 – Last night at the Winnipeg Convention Centre on the occasion of the 16th annual St Paul’s High School Tribute Dinner, Dr EmÅ‘ke Szathmáry became the 19th recipient of the Ignatian Challenge Award.
Recalling her own personal history and association with the Jesuits, Dr Szathmáry acknowledged that it was a great honour to join the company of past honourees, and indeed a special honour to be recognized by the Society of Jesus.
After World War II, Dr Szathmáry spent six years living in displaced persons camps moving from her native Hungary to Germany, before emigrating to Canada with her parents and siblings, eventually settling in Toronto. While in a camp in Osterode, Dr Szathmáry received first communion from Father J Pesti SJ, the Jesuit chaplain at the camp parish.
Thus began a long history of association between Dr Szathmáry and the Jesuit approach to faith and reason with a commitment to education, tenets that would become hallmarks of her own life and career. Among her many accomplishments in her tenure as President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manitoba was her support for the establishment of a minor in Catholic Studies at St Paul’s College. This was in keeping with the long history of the University of Manitoba as both a secular university and an institution open to the academic interests of students and faculty of faith-based colleges.
The evening is an annual fundraising event in support of the St Paul’s High School Bursary Fund, an essential aspect of a Jesuit education at St Paul's High School. The Dr EmÅ‘ke Szathmáry Bursary Fund was established as the primary beneficiary of the evening’s proceeds.
Individual and corporate dinner sponsors added to the proceeds of the dinner. Platinum level patrons contributing $10,000+ to the Bursary Fund included Paul’s Hauling Ltd., Bob Puchniak ’65 & Family, the Kleysen Family and Manshield Construction. Gold level patrons contributing $5,000+ included the University of Manitoba, Banville & Jones Wine Co., Piston Ring, RBC Royal Bank, Guertin Equipment, DeLuca Fine Wines and AVW-TELAV. This year, patrons were offered the opportunity to purchase Raffle Tickets for a chance to win great prizes. Tickets were $100 each and more than $16,000 in additional funds were raised through the generosity of the dinner patrons. The students of the Maroon & White Society worked hard through the evening to make the tickets available to patrons and their efforts were recognized by the great results.

St Paul's initiated the Ignatian Challenge Awards in 1994 in order to recognize individuals within our community who embrace the ideals of St Ignatius Loyola and who reflect the characteristics and qualities inherent in a Jesuit education at St Paul's High School. Award recipients, through their leadership and commitment to service, become examples for our students of a lived faith and philosophy of becoming men and women for others. The awards are bestowed annually at the St Paul's High School Tribute Dinner.
