19 March 2013— Solemnity of St Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Prayerful best wishes and blessings at the beginning of your pontificate!
The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”  Jesus said, “Feed my sheep." (John 21:17)
St Paul’s High School received with great joy the news of the election of Jesuit Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina. With even greater enthusiasm and discerning support, we send greetings to the new Supreme Pontiff from Winnipeg, Canada.
The People of God need to be fed on so many levels. May your spiritual wisdom and leadership reinforce all that is good with the Church and show us, by your example, new ways to evangelize Jesus the Christ in service to the poor as we build true communities of faith.
In a dream, Innocent III saw a poor man take upon his shoulder the weight of the Church.  That same man was thirteenth century, Francis of Assisi.  Three centuries later and rooted in the spirit of St Francis, St Ignatius Loyola, in his first act as Superior General of the Society of Jesus, missioned another great Francis, St Francis Xavier, to evangelize the Indies.  Praying to these great spiritual teachers, may we be inspired to affect positive change in our own time by imitating the life of Jesus Christ, the Man for Others.
In the name of the Society of Jesus, Superior General Adolfo Nicolás, gives “thanks to God for the election of our new Pope, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, S.J., [who] opens for the Church a path full of hope.”  Fr Nicolás adds “The distinguishing mark of our Society is that it is . . . a companionship . . . bound to the Roman Pontiff by a special bond of love and service.” (Complementary Norms, No. 2, § 2)
Through the intercession of Our Lady and her spouse, St Joseph, may our community, ignited by a union of hearts and minds, be profoundly moved to prayer that leads to action.
In Christ
